Open call for artists and works for Strömfors Biennal has begun! Are you one of the 2027’s BRICK biennale’s interpreters? We are looking for four place-bind outdoor art installations, three gallery exhibitions and two performances as part of the BRICK biennales program. Apply before 30.1.2027 by sending us your proposal how you would interpret the biennale’s theme “brick”.
Tulkinta – The interpretation
Strömfors Biennaali nostaa joka toinen vuosi esille yhden historiallisen ruukin materiaaleista tulkittavaksi eri taiteen linssien lävitse. Tavoitteena on nähdä materiaalit uudella tavalla ja nostattaa ajatuksia niiden luonteesta, menneisyydestä, nykyisyydestä, käytöstä ja tunnusta. Vuoden 2027 materiaali on tiili sekä sen raaka-aine, savi. Biennale kutsuu sinut tulkitsemaan tiiltä oman ilmaisusi kautta. Miltä tiili näyttää tekstiilin keinoin? Tai performanssin? Miltä savi kuulostaa klassisena sävellyksenä? Entä voiko saven hengen vangita raudasta valamalla? Mitä tiili tarkoittaa ja mitä siitä sen pinoaminen tai muuraaminen muodostaa? Miten sinä tulkitsisit tiiltä?
Every two years, the Strömfors Biennale highlights a specific material from the historic ironworks, inviting artists to interpret it through various artistic lenses. The aim is to view these materials in a new light and spark reflections on their nature, past, present, uses, and tactile qualities. The material for 2027 is brick and along with its raw material, clay. The Biennale invites you to interpret brick through your own medium. What does brick look like when rendered in textiles? Or through performance art? What does clay sound like as a classical composition? Can the spirit of clay be captured by casting it in iron? What does brick signify, and what forms emerge from stacking or laying it? How would you interpret brick?
Ulkoilmataide / Outdoor installations
Strömforsin Ruukin miljööseen sijoitettavat installaatiot ovat biennaalin kulmakivi. Vuonna 2027 neljä taiteilijaa valitaan työskentelemään alueella 27.–30.7.2027, käymään vuoropuhelua paikan, materiaalin ja ihmisten kanssa sekä toteuttamaan paikkasidonnaisia ulkotaideteoksia. Teokset voivat olla esimerkiksi visuaalisesti vaikuttavia, interaktiivisia, pohdituttavia, osallistavia tai kantaa ottavia. Teokset ovat esillä ruukilla Strömfors Biennalen ajan vähintään elokuun loppuun saakka. Pidemmästä sijoituksesta sekä teoksen myynnistä biennaalin päätteeksi voidaan sopia taiteilijan kanssa teoksesta riippuen.
Valitut taiteilijat saavat 1 500 euron palkkion sekä 350 euroa tarvittaviin materiaalikuluihin. Materiaalikuluissa voidaan myös neuvotella mahdollisten sponsorien kanssa. Ruukilla on olemassa pieni määrä osittain murskaantuneita vanhoja tiiliä, joita on mahdollista käyttää teoksessa. Lisäksi katamme kolmen yön majoituksen Strömforsissa teoksen rakentamisen aikana, matkakulut 100e (kotimaa) tai 500e (ulkomaat) sekä 30 euron päivärahan.

The installations situated within the Strömfors Ironworks setting form the cornerstone of the biennale. In 2027, four artists will be selected to work on-site from July 27 to 30, engaging in a dialogue with the location, materials, and people, and creating site-specific outdoor artworks. The works will be on display at the ironworks for the duration of the Strömfors Biennale, remaining in place at least until the end of August. Arrangements regarding a longer-term installation or the sale of the work at the conclusion of the biennale can be agreed upon with the artist, depending on the specific piece.
Selected artists will receive a fee of €1,500 and €350 to cover necessary material costs. It is also possible to negotiate material costs with potential sponsors. The Ironworks has a small stock of partially broken old bricks available for use in the artwork. In addition, we cover three nights’ accommodation in Strömfors during the construction of the work, travel expenses of €100 (domestic) or €500 (international), and a daily allowance of €30.
Present your vision for an outdoor artwork, explain how it interprets the biennale’s theme, and propose a location for the piece by filling out this application. Gallerianäyttely / Gallery exhibitions
Strömforsin Art -galleria sijaitsee Strömforsin Ruukin Tallinmäellä, Tallin ullakolla. Kesäkäytössä oleva galleria koostuu kolmesta näyttelytilasta: Vinttigalleriasta, V2 -galleriasta sekä Aulagalleriasta. Parillisina vuosina Strömfors Art galleriassa järjestetään neljä näyttelykierrosta kesässä, mutta biennaali-vuosina viimeinen kierros elokuussa on varattu biennaalin teemaan sovitetuille näyttelyille. Galleriatilaan voi ehdottaa näyttelyä yksin tai ryhmän kanssa. Miten sinä tulkitset “tiiltä” omalla tekniikallasi?
Näyttelytilat tarjotaan biennaalin teemaan sopiville näyttelyille ilmaiseksi. Näyttelyaika on 30.7.2027 – 29.8.2027 ja näyttelyn rakentaminen toteutetaan aikavälillä 29.–30.7.2027. Strömfors Art gallerian näyttelyt ovat lähtökohtaisesti myyntinäyttelyitä, myydyistä teoksista peritään 20% myyntiprovisio.

Strömfors Art Gallery is located in the Stable Area (Tallinmäki) of the Strömfors Ironworks, in the stable loft. The gallery, which operates during the summer season, comprises three exhibition spaces: the Vintti Gallery (Vinttigalleria), the V2 Gallery, and the Lobby Gallery. In even-numbered years, the gallery hosts four exhibition rounds each summer; however, during biennial years, the final round in August is reserved for exhibitions aligned with the biennial’s theme. You can propose an exhibition for the space either as an individual artist or as part of a group. How would you interpret “brick” using your own technique?
Exhibition spaces are provided free of charge for exhibitions that align with the biennale’s theme. The exhibition period is July 30 – August 29, 2027, with installation taking place on July 29–30, 2027. Exhibitions at Strömfors Art Gallery are primarily sales exhibitions; a 20% sales commission is charged on sold works.
Performanssit / Performances
Performanssitaide on ajassa tapahtuva taidemuoto, jossa taiteilijan live-toiminta, keho ja läsnäolo toimivat ensisijaisena välineenä perinteisten materiaalien sijaan. Haemme Strömfors Biennaleen erityisesti kahta performanssitaiteilijaa tulkitsemaan tiili-teemaa paikkasidonnaisella performanssilla.
Valitut taiteilijat saavat 500 euron palkkion sekä 350 euroa tarvittaviin materiaalikuluihin. Lisäksi katamme yhden yön majoituksen Strömforsissa (30.–31.7. tai 31.7.–1.8.), 100 euron matkakulut sekä 30 euron päivärahan.
Performance art is an art form that unfolds in time, where the artist’s live actions, body, and presence serve as the primary medium rather than traditional materials. For the Strömfors Biennale, we are specifically seeking two performance artists to interpret the “brick” theme through site-specific performances.
The selected artists will receive a fee of €500 and €350 for necessary material costs. In addition, we will cover one night’s accommodation in Strömfors (July 30–31 or July 31–August 1), travel expenses of €100, and a per diem allowance of €30.
